About LAT and GAT
The Law Admission Test (LAT) and Graduate Assessment Test (GAT) are standardized admission tests administered by the Higher Education Commission’s Education Testing Council (HEC ETC). LAT is required for admission to five-year LLB programs at law colleges and universities recognized by the Pakistan Bar Council, while GAT is commonly required for admission to MS, MPhil, and equivalent postgraduate programs across many disciplines at HEC-recognized universities.
How the tests are structured
Both LAT and GAT are conducted in cycles throughout the year rather than as a single annual sitting, so candidates generally have several opportunities to appear within a year if they miss one cycle or want to improve their score. GAT itself has different versions (General and Subject-specific) depending on the postgraduate program a candidate is applying to, so it’s important to register for the correct version.
Why universities require these tests
Many universities in Pakistan use LAT or GAT scores as one component of their admission criteria alongside academic transcripts, statements of purpose, or interviews. Since individual universities and departments set their own minimum score requirements and weightage, check the specific admission criteria of the program you’re applying to rather than assuming a passing score guarantees admission.
